Episode 3: Why cognitive inclusion became my career priority
Published on 12 November 2024 • Hosted by Dr Lisa Colledge
The journey to finding your true purpose in life can be unexpected and deeply personal. For me, it began with my son, Chris, who was diagnosed with autism. As a mother, I wanted to build a world that was better equipped for him, one where he could thrive, both as a child and later as an adult in the workplace. This realization set me on a path toward inclusion, not only for neurodivergent individuals but for everyone in the workplace.
It wasn’t just about being a caring mother; it became about how I, as a leader, could make the workplace a more inclusive space for people like Chris and others who might feel marginalized or misunderstood. I began to learn more about cognitive inclusion and its broad benefits. As I led the disability inclusion ERG in my organization, I discovered that many people were grappling with their own challenges. Sharing my story opened doors for others to connect and feel seen, significantly improving morale and engagement.
Cognitive inclusion isn't just a feel-good initiative—it's a business strategy. By making simple shifts, such as encouraging multiple feedback methods or focusing on employee skills rather than rigid roles, we can create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The results are undeniable: higher employee engagement, lower turnover, and measurable business outcomes like increased profitability and innovation.
I founded Lisa Colledge Consulting to take this approach beyond the walls of my former company. I’m driven by the belief that inclusion is not just good for people—it's good for business.
I'm Lisa, and I help leaders create inclusive cultures that embrace all neurostyles. By empowering every team member to contribute at their best, while fostering mental well-being, you will boost innovation, retention, and talent acquisition—leading to enhanced business performance.
