Episode 1: From molecules to mindsets: my eclectic journey from science to leadership
Published on 12 November 2024 • Hosted by Dr Lisa Colledge
My career path has been anything but linear. It began in the world of biochemistry and molecular biology, a space where I was fascinated by the precision and complexity of molecular interactions. The skills I developed in the lab—attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a love for solving puzzles—have stayed with me throughout my professional journey.
After completing my PhD, I took on research roles that allowed me to dig deep into the science of life itself. But it was when I joined Elsevier that I realized my analytical background had even broader applications. At Elsevier, I moved from the lab to research analytics, working on projects to evaluate the real-world impact of scientific discoveries. This was where I began to see how evidence, when used effectively, can drive real change, both in science and in business.
As I progressed in my career, my passion for problem-solving expanded beyond research into leadership. Leading teams in research analytics was an incredible learning experience, but it was my role as a leader of Elsevier’s disability inclusion efforts that truly shifted my perspective. My personal experiences with neurodivergence—both through my work and as a parent of a child with autism—made me realize how critical inclusion is, not just in society but in the workplace.
However, advocating for diversity and inclusion didn’t just come from personal motivation; it also aligned with my love for solving complex problems. Creating environments where everyone, regardless of how they think, can thrive became a new kind of puzzle for me. One of the biggest challenges was translating the science of neurodiversity into practical workplace strategies that benefit both individuals and businesses.
Although I started as a scientist, I now consider myself just as much an advocate for cultural change. My path from molecules to mindsets reflects a broader shift: understanding that inclusivity, like science, requires intention, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from every experience.
In future posts, I’ll explore the specific ways businesses can better support neurodiverse talent and how doing so can foster more innovative, engaged teams. But for now, I’m reflecting on how far I’ve come—from analyzing molecules to building inclusive cultures that drive success. This journey has taught me that the most complex systems—whether in science or human behavior—require both curiosity and compassion to unlock their full potential.
I'm Lisa, and I help leaders create inclusive cultures that embrace all neurostyles. By empowering every team member to contribute at their best, while fostering mental well-being, you will boost innovation, retention, and talent acquisition—leading to enhanced business performance.
